Job Centres

Job Centres and Jobcentre Plus

From April 2002 there will be a gradual merging of Employment Service work and some Benefits Agency work under the Jobcentre Plus service. This will provide help for people to get work and will also pay most benefits to people of working age. Over the next few years some of the present Job Centres and Social Security Offices will be put together into single Jobcentre Plus offices.

Until then:
People of working age should first use their local Job Centre if they are;

• claiming Jobseeker's Allowance,
• looking for work, or
• looking for help with getting back to work.

People of state pension age and older should use their local Job Centre if they;

• want to carry on working once they have claimed their state pension, or
• are looking for work.
  

Local Social Security Offices should be the first contact for:

• People of any age making a claim for help from the Social Fund,
• People of working age making a claim for other benefits
• People of state pension age and older not working nor looking for work – over time as it develops its own service, The Pensions Service will write to everyone over or about to reach state pension age.
• People making a claim for Child Support Maintenance
• People making a claim because they are sick or disabled or caring for
  someone who is sick or disabled.
